Basic Education (which includes the support of Literacy) is one of the 6 areas of focus established by Rotary International, with September 8 being International Literacy Day, and the month of March designated at Rotary Literacy Month.  Within District 5190, there are many ways to integrate Literacy into projects already happening in your club.  The District Literacy committee is here to help support Literacy projects throughout your clubs….check out the links below for Rotary International resources….also you can read about exciting Literacy projects in the District newsletter….
And remember, literacy is more than just reading – Today's definition of literacy expands to include the skills necessary to solve problems, resolve conflicts, use technology, be effective community members, and achieve financial self-sufficiency.
District 5190 Literacy Committee Mission:
  • To serve as a conduit to clubs throughout 5190 to encourage literacy projects
  • Encourage literacy projects across avenues of service
  • Help clubs expand their literacy program by providing resources
District wide Project – LITTLE FREE LIBRARY
What is a Little Free Library?
It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. In addition to books, Little Free Library boxes could be used for other sharing opportunities….Be imaginative…what does your community need??…. And check back to this web page for a “Little Free Library” packet of information about our District 5190 project.
