2023 Music Contest Winner Is...

Congratulations to Adele Balcarek, winner of the 2022-2023 District 5190 Music Contest.  Adele competed against 8 other outstanding performers and was a unanimous winner.  She is pictured here with at the Saturday conference dinner with her parents, District Music chair Chip Lindloff and District Music sponsors, Jim and Gini Annis.  Adele performed flawlessly during dinner and was greeted with a lengthy standing ovation.  She was then quickly escorted back to Reno to attend her junior prom.  Adele is a junior at TMCC High School and represents the Rotary Club of Reno.

About the Warren and Fannie Annis Music Contest:

Jim Annis’s grandfather was a Rotarian in Duluth, Minnesota in 1910, and missed being a charter member by 10 months. He was instrumental in chartering the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Canada, thus making Rotary truly International.

Jim’s grandfather died when his father, Warren, was 13 years old.  Two Rotarians took his dad under their wing and helped him to graduate high school and ultimately graduate from Duluth State Teachers College.   After that Warren Annis committed to support Rotary as an adult in recognition of his mentors.

Warren was the charter secretary of the Rotary Club of Pleasanton, California in 1965 and its third president.   Warren was the first of his Club to be awarded a Lifetime Membership, and, finally, on his passing in 2013, his Club created the Warren Annis "Service Above Self" Scholarship which since then, has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships.

Some of Jim’s best childhood memories revolve around music and when his parents passed away in 2013, he wanted to honor them.  He and his wife Gini do so each year by sponsoring the Rotary District Music Contest in their memory and recognizing their lifetime commitment to Rotary.

Come Travel our Gravel!

On Saturday, June 24th, gravel cyclists – often self-identified as 'Gravel Grinders' – will choose to race or ride one of four courses of dirt and gravel roads in the third annual Ruby Roubaix Gravel Fondo. This exciting cycling event begins and ends in front of the Lamoille Schoolhouse, at the base of the glacially formed Ruby Mountain Range, just under 20 miles southeast of Elko, Nevada. The third annual Ruby Roubaix Gravel Fondo, hosted by the Elko Desert Sunrise Rotary Community Fund will welcome males and females, 12 years and older, to apply their skill and training on courses of 117 miles, 62 miles, 38 miles, and 22 miles. Enthusiastic and friendly community volunteers will greet cyclists at stops along the routes with smiles, refreshments, and snacks specific to the needs of cyclists performing over long distances in the sun and dust.

Proceeds from the 2021 and 2022 fundraiser successfully raised funds as intended, funding college scholarships, travel and tuition fees to RYLA and funds used in matching District Grants for improvement projects in Lamoille, Spring Creek, and Elko. Longstanding Sunrise Rotary Foundation Chair and Club Treasurer, Jean Sloan, is always the first to remind members, "When we apply for Rotary Grants, the District awards a dollar-for-dollar match for qualifying community improvement projects. It's a great way to leverage volunteer effort and generous donations into otherwise unaffordable area improvements."
Come join us for a physical challenge and a great cause in our third annual 'race or ride' Sunrise Rotary fundraising event. Learn more about the Ruby Roubaix Gravel Fondo and get involved by visiting our website or sharing our flyer.

He will share his experience at the club’s meeting on April 11th. The public is invited to attend to learn more about the international initiative.
