El Pital Project/Las Tables Rotary Project
household water for two communities in El Salvador

One of Yerington Rotary Interact students and scholarship recipients, Emily Bobrick, is studying engineering at Colorado State University. She belongs to Engineers without Borders, and he reached out to our club for support for this clean water project that is made possible through an International Grant with sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Fort Collins Colorado.

The university student engineers designed the project and it is the second project of its kind they have done in El Salvador.

Yerington Rotary donated $2000 and direct member donations of $2750 specifically, for this water project, which was combined with the fundraising efforts of the Fort Collins club to make this project come to life.

We are very proud of Emily, who is continuing find ways to serve others and have Rotary participate.

Update from ShelterBox:
on the Ground in Turkey and Syria

Two weeks in and ShelterBox aid has arrived in Turkey and Syria, including essential items such as tents, blankets, mattresses, and winter coats for children, with more on the way. The items will help people survive through this ongoing nightmare, protecting them from the winter weather, preventing the spread of disease, and providing some privacy, as they get back on their feet.

A well-coordinated response is vital in such a complex and huge crisis. Our emergency response teams are in Gaziantep – a large city in southern Turkey which was affected by the earthquakes. They have visited affected areas, where rescue efforts continue to search for people under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Being based in the city is helping our teams work out what aid people need and how to get it to them. Additional ShelterBox response team members have just arrived in Gaziantep to bolster our response efforts. Having an extra team on the ground means we can be more agile, work more closely with partners and move to different locations as needed as we explore ways to scale up our response. We also have a response team member in Istanbul coordinating with Rotary.

Our response teams are being supported around the clock by ShelterBox operations HQ in England. This is a hugely complex humanitarian response spanning two countries. Getting aid into Turkey and Syria is complicated but we are used to working in challenging environments. Our response teams have been developing partnerships, meeting with Rotary, and scaling up our work with existing partners from our Syria response. Planning has centered around the logistical challenges of the response and working out how each organization can add value over the coming days, weeks, and months.
Staff members at local NGOs, or their family and friends, have been badly affected by the earthquakes and so those organizations are regrouping to respond as effectively as possible.

In Syria, the border crossing we have used for years to move aid into northern Syria was disrupted by the earthquakes, but it has reopened. Two additional border crossings have also been open that were previously shut, to help with the international aid effort and getting much-needed supplies to people. Providing cash assistance could be an important element in this response too – giving people who have been left with nothing the flexibility to get what they need. At ShelterBox, the way we work means that our response will focus on where the biggest emergency shelter gaps are and what essential items are needed over the coming days, weeks, and months.

Dear Rotarian,

As a global humanitarian organization, Rotary continually takes action to help communities in need. Because you are a dedicated leader in Rotary, we want you to be among the first to know that The Rotary Foundation has established two temporary funds to support immediate relief efforts in Pakistan and Ukraine. In Pakistan, a severe monsoon season has caused devastating floods and affected millions of people. In Ukraine, the ongoing war has led to a continued humanitarian crisis. We’ll begin fundraising efforts soon to finance disaster response grants from these funds.

The Pakistan Flood Response Fund will help communities recover from the disaster that displaced people and destroyed crops. It will accept contributions, including District Designated Funds, until 31 December 2023 and distribute grants until 30 June 2024 or until the funds are spent. Any unused money will be transferred to the general Disaster Response Fund.

The Ukraine Response Fund will also accept contributions, including District Designated Funds, to support grants for districts affected by the war. It will operate on the same schedule as the Pakistan fund, accepting donations until 31 December 2023 and awarding grants until 30 June 2024 or until the money is spent. Any unused funds will also be transferred to the Disaster Response Fund.

Districts affected by the flooding in Pakistan or the war in Ukraine can apply for grants from the relevant fund to provide items such as water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing. To learn more and help these communities, you and your members can:
  1. Donate to the Pakistan Flood Response Fund or the Ukraine Response Fund
  2. Contribute your District Designated Funds
  3. Learn more about both funds and how to apply for disaster response grants
Fundraise among your colleagues, friends, and family using Raise for Rotary

We appreciate your assistance in supporting Rotary member-led projects to help these communities recover.

Sincerely,

Ian H.S. Riseley
2022-23 Trustee Chair

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT THE EFFORT IN UKRAINE THROUGH A GLOBAL GRANT...

Through a Global Grant, we can contribute to the cost of providing MOBILE CLINICS to Ukraine.

Each Clinic will cost $42,500. The unit cost covers the initial stocking and training of staff. After that the Mobile Clinic is owned by the regional hospital and it’s their responsibility to maintain and resupply the unit.

With support from District Governor Jeff Gabriel and our District Rotary Foundation Committee, we are reaching out to the clubs in District 5190 to determine which clubs might be interested in providing funding for such a project to pursue a Global Grant. We would like to have our clubs commit to a total of $15,200. A commitment of Any amount from your club is welcomed. The district will match the clubs’ contributions with the same amount, and The Rotary Foundation would match 80% of the clubs’ contributions.

Click here for the full financial details and here for an inventory list of what the mobile clinics will include.

2023 - 2024 District Grant Plan
announced February 23, 2023

The District Grants Steering Committee has announced changes in District Grants for the next Rotary year.

District Grant Funds for club projects will continue to match club funds on a 1-to-1 basis up to $2500. The club may plan to expend more than $2500 for the project, but there is a maximum of $2500 in District Grant Funds.

District Grant Funds for multi-Club projects will be increased to match each club’s funds on a one to one-and-a-third (1 to 1 1/3) basis up to $3325, to encourage clubs to work together on projects. For example, if 2 clubs work together on a project and each contribute $2500, a maximum of $3325 will be available for each club, for a total of $6650. An example of a 2-club project where each club donates $2500 results in:
  • Club A Contribution     $2500
  • Club B Contribution     $2500
  • Club A District Match  $3325
  • Club B District Match  $3325
  • Total Project Funding $11650

Bonus District Grant Funds will be available to clubs which qualify for the Every Rotarian Every Year Banner in the 2022-23 Rotary year.
  • A 30% bonus up to $750 will be made available for single-club projects.
  • A 30% bonus up to $1000 will be made available for multi-club projects.
  • Bonus Funds will also be available for projects when club funds are not being used at a maximum of $750 for single club projects and $1000 for multi-club projects.
  • To qualify, for the Every Rotarian Every Year Banner, every Rotarian who was a member of the Club on July 1 must contribute a minimum of $25 to the Annual Fund, with an average gift for the club of $100. (Members who joined the club during the current year are not counted.)
  • Bonus District Grant Funds must be requested by October 31, 2023.

Clubs are encouraged to earn the Every Rotarian Every Year Banner between now and June 30th in order to qualify for Bonus Funds next year!
