This past month has been exciting!

On February 13th, Rotary International President Nominee Jennifer Jones spoke to our district from her home in Ontario, Canada. Two hundred people gathered to hear her speak and to join in the Q and A afterward, when we learned that we had guests online with us from around the world including India, Bahamas, and Honduras. If you haven’t heard it already, here is the link to Jennifer’s beautiful message of hope for the future of Rotary.

Our membership across the district is up since January 1st. Thirty of our fifty-eight clubs (that’s 52%) have either maintained their membership levels or grown. In several clubs, multiple people have been inducted on the same day. New members coming into Rotary accept the online and/or hybrid nature of our meetings. One of the statistics I think is significant is that we have a 94% retention rate. And we are close to welcoming a new Satellite Club into our fold. I’m thrilled!

Our Rotary Foundation giving is on track to meet our annual goals and we have already exceeded our goals for PolioPlus. To date, we have contributed $300K to the Annual Fund and $71K to PolioPlus. Ninety one percent of our clubs have contributed something to TRF and we hope that by the end of the year that number will rise to 100%!  The work we do through The Rotary Foundation, both locally and around the world, makes such a difference in the lives of individuals and in the future of communities.

Registration for RALLYE Week (4/30-5/8) is open and each day I see the numbers growing. If you haven’t registered yet (just $59/person), please click here.  Look for the fun teaser videos from our keynote speakers. Speakers, entertainment, awards, and more! The first weekend will feature four general sessions plus several district and leadership meetings, while RALLYE week will culminate the second weekend with our virtual Leadership Learning Assembly. Remember, you don’t have to be “there” to “be there”! And, the first 200 to register will receive a special goodie bag. The parade of presidents will be Saturday morning and parade of presidents elect will be Sunday morning. Come online and help us cheer them on and thank them for their service to our clubs!

Each year we give out club awards at the District Conference and this year’s awards are called RALLYE Awards for that reason. Stretch those muscles in your club and go for the gold, though silver and bronze level awards will be noteworthy too! Check out the criteria based on our Rotary Core Values.  The deadline to submit the awards form is 4/7, so Presidents: mail your completed form to D5190awards@gmail.com.

And speaking of Presidents … Our clubs’ Presidents Elect started their PrePETS training and will continue preparation for their year as president into March. Our PEs, officers, and board members should all be signing up for LLA on 5/8 (see RALLYE registration link above!).

My birthday is this month. As I reflect on what it means to add a year to my age, I am reminded that it is a blessing to still be here.  I am reminded that it is a blessing to still have good health (knock on wood) and to be comfortable enough financially to take care of myself and my family. It is a blessing to have family and friends who care. It is a blessing to be able to serve others who are less fortunate than I. It is a blessing to be part of an organization that has a heart and a mission and is pursuing its vision with passion. And how fun and exciting to share this organization that is truly changing the world with others! Be proud to invite a friend to join in your Zoom calls or in-person as your clubs open up. Share Rotary and let Rotary open opportunities for us all. Look for ways to enjoy your JOurneY!

With it being the month of leprechauns and 4-leaf-clovers, I couldn’t resist including an old Irish blessing to see us through March and beyond: “May joy and peace surround you, contentment latch the door; may happiness be with you now, and bless you evermore.”

RYLA UPDATE!

We remain cautiously optimistic that three RYLA sessions (June 13-18, June 20-25 and July 11-16) will take place as scheduled.

We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Plumas County, CA where our host, Grizzly Creek Ranch, is located.  We will know with certainty on or about April 1 if RYLA will take place.

For now, we urge you to begin the process of identifying participants who would like to attend.  If you registered students last year who would still like to attend, please let us know via one of the two email addresses at the bottom of this page.  We have archived all registration documents from 2020 and can easily transfer them to this year.  And remember, both Juniors and Seniors are eligible to attend.  The registration deadline has been extended to May 15.

For “new” participant registration please have students find and complete the “participant registration form” found at our public website www.camp-ryla.org under the “participants” heading on the top of page banner.

Once students have registered, confirmations will be sent to both the student and the sponsoring club.

We will provide another update soon.

ROTARY IN THE NEWS!!

Check out this great article in The Union (Grass Valley) highlighting the impactful work done by local Rotarians hosting a food drive.

How many Rotary friends can you spot in the article's photos?

Have you ever heard of Maimonides 8 step ladder to charity giving?

I hadn’t either until this month’s Rotary Magazine column article by past RI President “Ravy”.
So I had to check it out!

Here are the 8 steps:
1. The lowest: Giving begrudgingly and making the recipient feel disgraced or embarrassed.
2. Giving cheerfully but giving too little.
3. Giving cheerfully and adequately but only after being asked.
4. Giving before being asked.
5. Giving when you do not know who is the individual benefiting, but the recipient knows your identity.
6. Giving when you know who is the individual benefiting, but the recipient does not know your identity.
7. Giving when neither the donor nor the recipient is aware of the other's identity.
8. The Highest: Giving money, a loan, your time or whatever else it takes to enable an individual to be self-reliant.”

Once I saw this I tried to relate this to myself and first thing that came to mind was a children’s board game, Chutes and Ladders.

Why that kind of a parody?

Because I engage in different philanthropic endeavors at so many different times and each with a different level of my passion. Not all receive the same commitment.

I go up a few rungs, slide back down and continue the climb. Just like chutes and ladders, sometimes you end up on a square that takes you back to starting on a lower rung. Often not always by your choice. Just like the social and economic challenges we are facing at this time.

So where are you on the ladder?

NEWS FROM CAP CITY PASSPORT!
Cap City Passport Club is pleased to announce that Deb Nelson is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. She received her pin with three beautiful sapphires in January during a Zoom meeting. Although Deb is modest about her donations, we are inspired by her example and celebrate her achievement. The club thinks the District would like to celebrate Deb's dedication to the Rotary Foundation and to the eradication of Polio. Kudos and hugs to Deb for her dedication and her friendship.

This month the Cap City Passport Club is inaugurating a new fundraiser to support our Youth Programs and CASA. We will be having a raffle that coincides with the running of the Kentucky Derby. The proceeds of the ticket sales will help off-set our costs for these programs during the pandemic. We will be hosting a Zoom event to pull the winning ticket and a toast to the lucky ticket holder. Tickets will also be chosen randomly to reward the second and third place ticket holders. We look forward to finding new ways to support the great programs Cap City Passport Club is involved with in Carson City.
