October is Community Economic Development Month!

Rotary creates opportunities to help individuals and communities thrive financially and socially.  A single act of good can go a long way.  It can cross oceans and foster opportunities.  As members of Rotary our actions have the power to speak loud and clear.  We are People of Action.

We chose to see the world as it could be, through our commitments around the world and in our own communities.  We provide training and access to well paying jobs as well as micro loans to generate new business in under privileged countries.

World-wide, nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day.  Rotary members are passionate about providing sustainable solutions to poverty.  Our members and our Rotary Foundation work to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.

Locally, we encourage clubs to support student scholarships for higher learning.  We promote vocational learning and support the many vocations of our members, as well as working with other organizations and business leaders to improve the economic vitality in our communities.

In response to RI President Shekhar Mehta’s initiative, to hold Rotary Days of Service, I encourage clubs to promote hands-on volunteer experiences to strengthen our communities.  It may be prudent to do a Community Assessment first, in order to offer meaningful volunteer opportunities for families and partner organizations to address challenges in your areas.  Make it easy for members in your town to see us as People of Action, and encourage them to take action with us, regardless of their profession or their affiliation with Rotary.

Help for Haiti

ShelterBox is sending a response team to the Caribbean region, after a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks that struck Haiti on Saturday.

We are seeking support from Rotary clubs and districts to help in our efforts here.

Buildings have been flattened. Hospitals already under strain from COVID-19 are overwhelmed. Now with Haiti in the path of Tropical Storm Grace, survivors of the earthquake could be hit by strong winds, driving rain, flooding, and mudslides. Many will be facing these conditions with their homes already destroyed. Rescue efforts could be severely affected.

The ShelterBox team will work with fellow humanitarians to assess damage reports, understand from communities what they need, and work on the challenging logistics of delivering aid to areas where buildings have been reduced to rubble.

Your generous donations are hugely appreciated.

AREA 4 UPDATE

Although our community has been stressed with a rise in Covid-19 cases and a number of fires, the Clubs of Area 4 continued to gear up for the many fall fundraisers and socials for the Fall season.  To start the new Rotary year, the Rotary Club of Grass Valley hosted an area social featuring DG Anita’s daughter, Kris Stepanian and the Auburn Wind Band Ensemble at the end of August. Although it was a little smoky, the event was a real success.

Both the Rotary Club of Nevada City and the Rotary Club of 49er Breakfast established new committees around the newest Rotary International Area of Focus, the Environment. Chris Newsom and Holly Hermansen will chair each of these groups within their respective clubs.

And the fundraising kick-offs have begun in Area 4 with the Duck Race from the Rotary Club of 49er Breakfast recently held on Sept 19, the Rotary Club of Grass Valley South’s Glow Golf Ball Drop on October 1, the Rotary Club of Penn Valley’s Golf for Kids event, and the Rotary Club of Grass Valley’s “Trick or Tri-Tip” BBQ drive through dinner on Halloween.

Have a safe and happy Fall!!

Invitation to Participate in the District 5190
Healthy Water Project

Is your club interested in an international service clean water project close to home? DG Anita and District 5190 have a great opportunity for us!

The Project:
We will be distributing water filtration kits to 300 Mexican residents in rural communities around the community of Los Barriles in the East Cape area of Baja Sur, Mexico. This project is a joint effort by District 5190 clubs and the Los Barriles Cabo de Este Rotary Club.

Clubs are invited to contribute to this district-wide project and participating Rotarians will have the opportunity to be boots-on-the-ground to learn how the water filtration kits function from lead trainers and then to teach recipient families how to use them in a sustainable way.

Clubs are being asked to contribute $250 or more to match district funds. A total of $7500 is being raised from club contributions to match the District Grant of $7500, for a total project funding of $15,000 (this is the updated correct grant amount).

Individual Rotarians from contributing clubs will be offered the opportunity to participate in the project. Rotarians will pay for their own travel, lodging and meals.

Click here for the full project and contact information.

Chester Rotary Club Granted

IFSR Youth Service Award

Chester Rotary Club has been granted the IFSR Youth Service Award as a result of an article published in the Plumas News.  This award may be downloaded here. To learn more about the IFSR Youth Service Award and to download the award from the IFSR website, click here.

The IFSR, International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians, is a Rotary Fellowship promoting service to Youth through Scouting and Guiding. As IFSR webmaster, I search for reports of Rotary-Scout interaction and send an email of commendation to the Rotary Club involved. Your publicizing your club’s relationship with Scouting has served as an example for other Rotary clubs looking for ways to promote the Scouting movement.

We know about you, you should know about us. IFSR is composed of over a thousand Rotarians in 45 countries that work to promote Scouting and Guiding through their membership in Rotary. We have a website: ScoutingRotarians.org and a Facebook page.

IFSR Certificates and Awards for Your Club to Present

On our website, we have certificates the Rotary Clubs can award Scouts and Guides and an award that Rotary Clubs can award a Scout or Guide unit that has performed community service. The IFSR Community Service Award may be awarded by any Rotary Club to a Scout or Guide unit of their choice they wish to recognize for performing community service. The award may be given annually to any Scout or Guide unit by any Rotary Club. Recipients are selected by the Rotary Club.

This is not a Scouting award nor a Rotary award, but an IFSR award and is intended to permit Rotary Clubs to recognize Community Service performed by local Scout and/or Guide units.

To help Rotary Clubs create and print the award locally, this website has a fillable PDF version of the certificate which is easy to fill out:

1) Open the form here

2) Enter the name of the Scout or Guide unit (i.e., Troop 101, Metropolis)

3) Enter the name of the Rotary Club (i.e. Metropolis Rotary Club)

4) Enter the date of the Award presentation

5) Then print the award or save and print at a print center.

Please notify the IFSR webmaster [webmaster@scoutingrotarians.orgof the Scout or Guide Unit Name, Rotary Club Name and Date and a record of the award will be posted on the IFSR Awards webpage.
